Waxing Aftercare…what is it?

Waxing does come with its own set of rules to follow for the best results. I’m sure your wondering, “Is aftercare really that important?” Yes! No matter the type of hair removal method (although we may slightly be biased towards waxing) waxing, shaving, at home wax kits, sugaring , you name it, has the potential to irritate our beloved largest organ. Red bumps, redness, ingrown hairs, and breakouts are the undesirable irritations you may experience with hair removal. Although, when you are consistent with your AFTERCARE you minimize the risk of any unwanted bumps or ingrown’s, and you set your skin up for optimal results and waxing success.

So lets break down different types of aftercare.

Redness. Soothing redness after a wax is the most common irritation one will face after a waxing. Although we try our hardest to make sure your wax is as painless a possible, we are still pulling the hair out from the root. The pulling can cause the redness and swelling of the skins pores where the hair was just removed. All totally normal if your wondering. If redness does occur you will typically only notice redness for a few hours post-wax. Redness can be a slight pink tone to the area waxed or little red dots, which are just swollen pores from the hair removal itself. After a waxing service there is generally always a serum or oil of sorts that is immediately applied after a wax to help soothe the freshly waxed area. Most after care products have ingredients such as coconut, aloe, lavender or calendula because not only do they feel incredible, but they are so calming. These ingredients also provide antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help to relieve irritations and redness for stressed skin.

Using a chemical exfoliant. No, this does not mean putting something harsh on your skin. Using a chemical exfoliant means your using enzymes to break down dead skin cells. Think facial peels or if you have heard the term AHAs or BHAs. These are powerful “chemical” exfoliants that help to remove dead skin cells from the surface. AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) dissolve the glue that holds dead skin cells together, while BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acid) work deeper in the skin and have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Strong enough to do the job yet gentle enough to be used regularly on the skin to heal. Chemical exfoliants are great for someone prone to ingrown hair and bumps! But always speak with your Esthetician on how and when to use, as each product is different and everyone’s skin is different.

Using a physical exfoliant. This covers any scrubby like product. Bath mitts scrubbers, loofahs, sugar scrubs, salt scrubs, coffee scrubs….do you see where we are going here? Lol, anything the scrubs will manually slough (scrub) away dead skin. However, you’ll want to avoid scrubs with large granules, such as crushed shells or nuts (read your ingredients!). These types of scrubs can be too aggressive and can also cause microscopic tears to your skin and pores, which equals faster break down of your skin and you guessed it…faster aging of the skin. An no one wants that. Be careful. This type of exfoliant is good for everyone, especially those that get those little hairs that don’t quite create an ingrown (those annoying bumps that mimic a pimple) but they grow flat along your skin just under those first few layers of skin. If you wax your legs regularly, this is absolute a product you want in your skin care arsenal.

Step away from the razor. Yes you read that right. If you are waxing the biggest mistake we see in the room, even from the most seasoned guest, is shaving in between your wax appointments! Stop it! It may seem like a quick fix to those little sprouting hairs, but shaving only removes hair at the skins surface. So those hairs will just appear a day or two later and with a vengeance. Shaving actually encourages the hair to grow back faster, thicker, coarser, and fuller, resulting in more hair growth from each pore!! Waxing pulls the hair from the root and will sync all of your hair growth cycles to come in at the same time, resulting in smooth skin for weeks!

In summary aftercare is important to protect your investment in you!
